  6. The best thing to EVER come out of Russia was Tetris, although caviar
  7. and vodka should be right up there. However, Tetris is non-fattening and
  8. does not contain alcohol. It is  the best choice over the other two and
  9. is much cheaper. Tetris is habit-forming though. Once you start playing
  10. it you keep saying, "One more game, just one more, just one more..." I
  11. was hooked the first time I played the original version. Since that time
  12. there have been many Tetris-like games available both commercially, and
  13. via shareware. Spectrum Holobyte, the original releaser of Tetris has
  14. even brought us several sequels (more later).

  16. To celebrate the 5th year of Tetris Spectrum has released a Special
  17. Commemorative Edition CD-ROM named, Tetris Gold. This CD-ROM contains
  18. games for three platforms: MS-DOS, Windows, and Macintosh. In addition
  19. it contains the complete Tetris line released by Spectrum Holobyte, the
  20. never before released MS-DOS prototype of Tetris,  and a special
  21. 10-minute interview with Alexey Pajitnov, the Russian creator of Tetris.

  23. Tetris, and its sequels, is a simple, yet challenging game. For those
  24. not familiar with it, the concept is to form rows of blocks. As you form
  25. a row, it is removed and you are awarded points. You must remove a
  26. specific number of rows before you proceed to the next level. With the
  27. sequels, each game has a different theme, but the same basic concept.
  28. Some of the games support sound cards. The CD-ROM includes online
  29. manuals for all the games.

  31. The Tetris Gold CD-ROM collection includes the six versions of Tetris,
  32. and the MS-DOS based prototype. Below is a description of the games of
  33. Tetris, and the platforms supported for the games. Not all platforms
  34. supported for all games.

  36. * Tetris (MS-DOS, MAC), the original game that started the craze.
  37. Manipulate blocks to form complete lines. The pieces fall faster with
  38. every new level, and there are 10 levels to play.

  40. * Welltris (MS-DOS, MAC), the first sequel. Pieces  fall into a
  41. four-sided well with grid-like walls and bottom. Moving pieces may be
  42. rotated and moved from wall to wall within the well. Earn points by
  43. forming solid rows either horizontally or vertically on the bottom of
  44. the well.

  46. * Faces...Tris III (MS-DOS, MAC), is slices of peoples faces: chins and
  47. lips, eyes, and head. You must stack the pieces in proper order from
  48. chin to forehead to earn points.

  50. * Wordtris (MS-DOS, MAC), has players manipulate single letters that
  51. fall from the top of the screen. The objective is to form words with
  52. letters that have already fallen. Wordtris recognizes over 60,000 words.
  53. More points are awarded for longer or more complex words.

  55. * Tetris Classic (MS-DOS, Windows), is the original updated with
  56. brilliant VGA graphics and enhanced game  play. It features dual-pit
  57. competitions and double-wide cooperative games. Classic also features
  58. beautifully rendered graphics depicting Alexander Pushkin's famous fairy
  59. tale Ruslan and Ludmilla and a soundtrack based on the opera.

  61. * Super Tetris (MS-DOS, MAC, Windows), contains the familiar falling
  62. squares will presenting explosive new challenges. Work your way through
  63. deep scrolling pits filled with falling bombs and hidden treasures. This
  64. version includes two-player modes and timed games.

  66. As a Tetris addict, I highly recommend this CD-ROM to everyone. You are
  67. getting six games with multiple platform support, which assures you of
  68. being able to play it almost anywhere, and a price that is just about
  69. what you would normally pay for one  or two games.
